Tech Alerts: Pop-Up Message Scams

Computer Support Phone Scams

Don’t fall for Pop-Up Message Phone Scams

We’re sharing a Security Alert about Tech Support Pop-Up Scams that have been around for a while, but since we had to help a client delete the software this week, it never hurts to share the warning periodically:

Do NOT call a phone number displayed on a pop-up message that warns your computer has a virus or security problem!

Microsoft will NOT send you this type of message and ask you to call them. It’s a scam!

Here is what happened to one of our clients:

A pop-up window appeared on their PC, telling them that the computer was infected and advised calling a phone number.

The client called, and got a person on the phone who said they were a Microsoft partner, and offered to help.

The client gave them access to the computer, the person on the phone downloaded their product; and then asked for payment for this “security” product.

At that point the client hung up and turned off their machine.

Dave checked out the client’s computer to make sure no files had been deleted, corrupted, or flagged for ransom. Then he deleted the security software downloaded during the scam.

He also ran MalwareBytes which identified the software as malware, and then cleaned up any remnants of the scam software.

If you get any  kind of pop-up window advising you to call a phone number, please DO NOT CALL it! Call your PC Tech person first! That means us if you are already a client.

If you’re not a League Computer Solutions client and you’re located in Florida: Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando, Hillsborough counties (or nearby area), and you’d like more information, feel free to call Monday-Friday during business hours: 9:00 am -5:30 pm – 727-375-9200.
