Facebook’s Interest Lists help you sort through the “clutter” of your News Feed and stay updated on topics that interest you the most. In your personal use, that can be helpful for networking, curating content and market research.
As a Page owner, Interest Lists offer an opportunity to increase your visibility since public Interest Lists give users the option to subscribe. Your Page’s updates also have less of a chance of being “lost” in the noise on the main News Feed when they are part of a user’s Interest List.
Are you using Interest Lists? Here are a few tips:
To create a new Interest List, look for the “Interests” menu on the left side of your Profile’s Home Page and click on “Add Interests”. [ If you don’t see an Interests section, you can go to your Interest Page within Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/bookmarks/interests ]
A new window opens with your current Pages, Subscriptions and Friends – just click on the accounts you want to add to this Interest List.
Choose the viewing option – public, friends or only visible to you.
Once you’ve created the Interest List, you can always add more accounts by typing the account name in the box to the right of your Feed (see above) or by adding a Page to your List when you click the “Like” button on that Page (see below):
Since each Interest List has its own unique URL, a user can “promote” the List and their friends can subscribe right from the post.
To get your Interest List’s URL, from your Profile’s Home page, click and open the Interest List (mine is called “Social Media Tips & Resources ”). Then copy the URL from your browser.
Paste the URL into a status update and you’ll see a preview of the List with the option to “Subscribe” as a live link:
Once a user has subscribed to a public Interest List, updates from that List show up in the user’s News Feed.
Business strategy:
Interest List subscriptions offer an opportunity for a Page to gain greater visibility, so take the following steps:
Suggest in a post that your Fans add your Page to their Interest Lists (with the “Pin a Post” option on Timeline for Pages, you can keep this post at the top of your Timeline for several days at a time).
Continue to provide useful content on a regular basis so your Page status updates have a chance of being highlighted when the Interest List shows up in subscribers’ news feeds.
