Monday’s Motivation: Decision-Making – Progress, not Perfection

Franklin D Roosevelt quote“Progress, not perfection” is a great motto for small business owners! How often do you get stuck, waiting for conditions to be perfect before moving forward in your business? If we just made the decision to take action without worrying about perfect conditions, think how much farther we would be.

Apply this decision-making motto to your social media strategy too. Many people I talk to are so overwhelmed with where to start on social media and how “perfect” their profile picture or website has to be that before they know it, another month has passed and they are still preparing their social media sites.

Keep your social media strategy and actions simple in the beginning:

  • Set 3 initial goals for your social media program
  • Find out what sites your ideal clients are spending time on
  • Choose one of those sites to start with and set up a profile
  • Develop a social media schedule (when will you post updates, who will post content)
  • Create a basic Content Strategy (which will be expanded later on): focus on what problems you can solve for your audience, what questions your audience currently has, what helpful tips you can share with your audience, etc.

Then start being social! Spend time daily on that one site, make new connections and offer helpful information.

You can make adjustments to your social media profiles, content strategy and schedule as you go along, but in the meantime, you are building relationships with your audience and making real progress in social media.

This terrific phrase “Progress, not Perfection” was shared by PJ Van Hulle during the List-a-Palooza 90 Day List-Building Challenge that I am participating in this summer.
